WELCOME MARION MULDER, my guest and new friend.   Welcome to my Linkedin colleagues and friends.  There is a reason you have been referred to this amazing story… Melanie Nathan.

“The butterfly effect – how adding one LinkedIn connection can lead to a life changing chain of events”

Like many people I have a profile on LinkedIn and I am part of a number of LinkedIn groups. About a month or so ago someone I had never met – Melanie from California in the US – connected with me as a fellow LGBT professional group member. Although I had never met her – I live in the Netherland – I decided to accept.

One thing lead to another, we exchanged some emails and Melanie asked me to write something for her blog. Although I was honored to write about myself and my work, I suggested to perhaps write something about the love-exiles foundation, experts on immigration issues of bi-national same-sex couples, of my dear friend and colleague Martha.

Next thing I introduced Martha – originally also from California – and Melanie and they connected. Martha and her partner Lin happened to go on holiday to California a few weeks ago where Martha met for lunch with Melanie and with 2 other ladies – Jay and Shirley. Shirley had immigration problems and was about to have to leave the US.

Lunch was had, phone call were made, emails were send. The media got wind of Shirley’s story.

Today we woke up to very good news this morning: Senator Feinstein introduced a private bill yesterday that will keep Shirley Tan in the United States through December 2010. For a full story please read:

So,  why am I sharing this all with you?  Well, the next time someone wants to connect with you, and you wonder “why should I?”  This is precisely why you should!

Never doubt that one person can make a difference!

  2. Great article. I totally agree – you never know where a connection will take you – or where it won’t if you miss a connection. I always wonder why people deny an opportunity to connect. The possibilities are endless!
